Workshops and Study Groups

offline meeting May 2009: "Can we provide Evidence based Therapy for Children with Disabilities?" : The meeting was jointly sponsored by the Castang Foundation and the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation. This meeting endeavoured to produce consensus statements on systematic approaches to interrogation and implementation of the evidence base for effective treatment in child neurodisability. A hand book is to be developed from the outcome of this meeting which will appeal to parents, therapists and local government officials.
offline meeting Nov 2008: "Disability, Disadvantage and Delinquency: Breaking the Cycle" : This meeting emphasised the relationship between disability, disadvantage and delinquency and how best to break the cycle. The difficulty remains of translating academic knowledge to practical application. It is hoped that as a result of this meeting a study will evolve studying the different management strategies to establish early intervention and therapies across Europe.
offline meeting Nov 2007: "The Physiology of Motor Development : Implications for Children with Motor Disabilities": The meeting was held at the Novartis Foundation in London.  It brought together specialists in the field of neurodisability to discuss the physiology of motor development.   The importance of understanding the physiology of movement is vital if children and adults with neurological problems are to be assessed and treated in the most effective manner.  Abstracts are available (password protected) and there is space for comment.
offline meeting May 2007: "Quality of Life for the Young Adult with Neurodisability": This section contains details of the meeting on Quality of Life for the Young Adult with Neurodisability which took place on 9 and 10 May 2007. A website is available for those involved in the meeting to exchange ideas and discuss how the ideas discussed at the meeting can be taken forward.
offline meeting Dec 2006: "Disordered Auditory Processing in the Child": Nature, Assessment and Intervention: A multidisciplinary approach: This workshop run with the help of Anne O’Hare from Edinburgh brought together three groups of clinicians in terms of Speech and Language Therapists, paediatric audiologists and basic scientists to discuss auditory processing in the child. A website is available for those involved in the meeting to exchange ideas and discuss how the ideas discussed at the meeting can be taken forward.
offline meeting April 2006: "Functioning Brain Changes in Puberty and Adolescence": The transition period when a child moves from paediatric to adult care is frequently noted as the time when services distintegrate and changes occur. Young disabled adults will recount how these changes may lead on to an unhappy life. There is a paucity of material available about brain changes in adolescence and this meeting brought together many distinguished workers in the field. A publication is being planned.
offline meeting Nov 2005: "Visual Impairment": This workshop was run with the help of Gordon Dutton , professor of ophthalmology from Glasgow. Visual impairment due to brain damage, first called cortical and later also cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is now the leading cause of childhood visual impairment in industrialised countries. This workshop brought together international experts in the field to review current knowledge and the aetiological and neuropathological under-pinnings of these conditions. A book is being published as a result of this workshop.
offline meeting April 2005: "Childhood Hemiplegia (Stroke)": Fairly consistently in epidemiological literature on cerebral palsy about one third of this population have hemiplegia. In general the ‘stroke’ cases have been regarded in the past as not susceptible to intervention with a view to prevention. This workshop reviewed the causes of perinatal stroke and considered what steps can be taken to prevent or ameliorate the damage.
details of the washington workshop July 2004: "Definition and Classification of Cerebral Palsy": a meeting supported jointly by The Castang Foundation and the United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation in Washington: (This workshop met in Washington and was directed by Dr Martin Bax & Professor Murray Goldstein, director of UCPRA with a planning committee comprising: Olof Dammann, Bo Jacobsson, Karl Kuban, Alan Leviton, Nigel Paneth & Peter Rosenbaum. A website is available for exchange of ideas by Workshop participants.
